This presentation examines the fundamental role of culturally relevant fictional narratives in enhancing the identity and self-esteem of bilingual students within educational settings. Addressing the challenges of cultural identity in bilingual education underscores the importance of fostering a positive self-concept for academic success. Authors Milagros Otero Wallace and Will Canduri tested two of their works, Gregorina en Chicago, la ciudad de los vientos, with members of the New Life Center shelters and the Adios Oviedo with the parent component, SWOP, at Edwards School to assess the impact of these narratives on students and adults in relation to their identity and self-esteem. Attendees will gain practical strategies for integrating culturally resonant literature into their classrooms, providing students and adults (parent component) with opportunities for self-reflection, cultural exploration, and personal growth. Through this innovative approach, educators can empower bilingual students to embrace their identities with confidence and engage meaningfully in their educational journey, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and supportive learning environment. Participants will reflect on their own experiences and knowledge to expand upon their understanding of Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop’s metaphor of “Mirrors, Windows, & Sliding Glass Doors.” They will consider how this concept is rooted in Culturally Responsive Teaching practices and examine its importance in the multilingual classroom. Finally, they will explore some activities, strategies, and resources that can help them facilitate “Mirrors, Windows, & Sliding Glass Doors” in their own classrooms.
The N7 Dual Language PLC focuses on improving dual language instruction through a cyclical process of inquiry and action. The DLCs have an opportunity to identify a problem of practice within the dual language program, conduct internal walkthroughs to gather data related to the identified problem and engage in learning cycles to develop and implement targeted solutions. This collaborative approach fosters professional growth and drives instructional improvements to better serve dual language learners.

This session will describe how Bateman teachers use technology to generate and share differentiated Dictados that are aligned to their grade level SLA standards and respond to their students' specific needs in Spanish phonics and Spanish writing conventions. Because the Dictados are recordings that students access either in a group or individually on the computer, this also allows Dictado time to be a time for teachers to work with small groups. The session will cover planning, roll-out, and some troubleshooting tips and give participants a chance to generate their own Dictados.
In this presentation, we will emphasize how we teach conventions (text layout, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation) in our weekly dictates and how we assess these transfer skills in our Puente lesson. We will share the activities and skills we communicate with students to achieve our daily and weekly objectives in our DLE journey.

This session equips Dual Language Coordinators with strategies to implement MTSS in dual language classrooms, focusing on culturally responsive tiered support. Participants will explore tiered scenarios, strategies for providing those various tiered levels of support, and data-driven decision-making tailored to multilingual learners.
This interactive workshop equips educators with practical strategies to support oral language development in dual language classrooms. Participants will explore the "Level Up!" vocabulary strategy. We'll see examples of scaffolding and oral engagement at the word, sentence, and discourse levels with chat cards for routine practice of content vocabulary and concepts. Finally, we'll discuss building a culture of risk-taking at all proficiency levels. Educators will have hands-on workshop time to adapt one of these strategies to their own curriculum, ensuring immediate classroom application. This session is ideal for teachers looking to differentiate oral language instruction and build students’ confidence in speaking academic Spanish and English.
The Roosevelt DLLT will walk participants through what DLE looks like at the secondary level with respect to the DLE strands. Comparisons will be made between programs in primary vs. secondary. Discussions will be focused on program structure, programming and collaboration with all stakeholders.
Participants will engage on the process of how to bridge a unit from one language to the other in PreK. Participants will also have the opportunity to apply the process by creating a bridging anchor chart together. Participants will have a chance to create plan their anchor charts for their current unit.
This session is designed for English and Spanish content area teachers looking to deepen students’ academic language skills. Moving beyond comprehensible input and sheltered instruction, we will explore the distinction between academic language and vocabulary. Participants will learn how to use standards-based sentence stems to support student discourse and writing. The session will also highlight strategies for transitioning from oracy to writing, ensuring students develop strong communication skills across disciplines.

The idea of translanguaging may feel new, strange, or at odds with the traditions of dual language bilingual education structures. Together, we will explore translanguaging as a practice in the classroom--what it is and what it looks like in action--and examine how it can support the goals of dual language instruction.
During this presentation, we share structures for coaching Dual/Bilingual teachers by modeling different factors and data sets to use during these sessions.
